Ashwagandha was used by the Tanganyikans of Tanzania as a safe narcotic, a sedative, and a tranquilizer. Recently, Ashwagandha has been scientifically shown to protect brain cells from oxidative damage caused by exposure to stressors. As a result, it has become one of the most popular herbs to nurture and clarify the mind before entering meditative states. Usually, a big spoonful is stirred into the liquid of your choice with a pinch of honey and cinnamon.

In Ayurveda there are seven basic body constitutions resulting from the predominance of one or more energetic influences or Doshas. The Doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, influence physical, mental and spiritual health. Everyone is considered to be a unique combination of these three body influences. Your natural Doshic state of balance is called Prakruti. Pegasus is used for general health, managing stress and to enhance physical and mental stamina. It can also have numerous balancing benefits for the Doshas.

Also, Ashwagandha has one of the longest lists of uses in herbal medicine, dating back to before recorded history.  The following is a general list, collected from many sources regarding the many uses for an herb that is considered as most important adaptogens in ayurvedic system of medicine:  It works in suppressing pains of any sort due to its ushan virya potency.  Good results have been seen in diseases like Amavata (rheumatoid arthritis), sandhi gata vata (Osteoarthritis), vatarakt (gout), gridhasi (sciatica) and other vata dominant diseases, but of course, these results are not known in the United States.

It has been reportedly used as an anti-inflammatory substance both internally and externally.  Many believe that it possess great healing properties and therefore has great effects in healing wounds and injuries, but that it also can relieve stress due to presence of vata suppressant properties that help in nurturing the nervous system.

The properties we have come to appreciate here at the shop, is that we feel this herb helps in promoting calmness and mental satisfaction in the mind.  It is an herb that we often use when preparing for a meditative session, or when we need to learn or retain important details because it improves our mental ability, helps in retension, and improves our mental concentration overall.  The nourishment that it provides for the brain has also been seen in a seed called Celastrus, which we have seen made into an amazing product called Cognihance.

Other Ayurvedic uses reportedly include revitalizing the body and decreasing fatigue caused due weak body strength and accumulation of negative energies in the body, working as rasayan i.e. a substance that helps in preventing early aging and rejuvenates whole body to provide youth, a powerful immune booster that helps in fighting any foreign invasion in the body, antioxidant properties that help fight early aging, and is one of the most commonly used herb in relieving hypertension.

I have found ashwagandha powder to be excellent for pain although it does make me a little sleepy. The taste leaves a little to be desired but is manageable. All in all, its a great product for the price. You really cant go wrong. :)

Highly recommended ayurvedic herb. I have been doing much research for a safe anti-anxiety medicine. Certainly promotes a sense of well being and contentment. I could really give two beans about the taste since it works and thats what really matters. PS- For those of you who dislike the taste, I reccommend trying " Leaf of God".

I totally disagree about the taste. I think powdered Ashwagandha tastes like crushed tylenol, nothing like ginger. I dissolve it in hot water and add tons of cinnamon, and sometimes sugar, coriander or agave nectar, and usually a splash of almond milk. Then I drink it in 2-3 huge gulps, each chased by something flavorful like GT's synergy kombucha, and still end up gagging. That said, ashwagandha is a remarkable herb in its potency and effects. I just don't recommend getting the powder when there is a tincture available that goes down much easier.

This plant has a very positive, powerful effect. It is both calming and mentally stimulating, particularly in a meditative sense. I have used it several times before entering a meditation session and it has increased my focus remarkably and allowed me to achieve a tranquil state of mind very rapidly and to focus for long periods of time without difficulty. I have been mixing the powder in with hot milk and agave nectar and drinking - the flavor is not bad, similar to powdered ginger and a little spicy. The texture is quite grainy, so maybe buying whole root and making tea would be a little more palatable, but overall this is an excellent product!
