The chief calming effect of Motherwort is that it stimulates the release of a hormone called Oxytocin. This hormone was originally identified and used because it was noticed that oxytocin induces labour. Perhaps this is the reason for the name. It is also hypothesized that the spiking of oxytocin in mother and infant after birth may support the intense bonding during the first period post birth. Recent research has noted that Oxytocin is also released during the "bonding" period in men and women. The release of the hormone reduces social caution and increases the level of trust a person feels toward others, in general, as the level of the hormone increases. A knock off product that is possibly a scam, based on research that nasal applications of oxytocin in people increases trust levels, is called "Liquid Trust", which claims to act as a cologne like pheromone that induces trust in others. Whether this works or not is not clear but it is clear that direct application of oxycontin nasally, it is broken down when taken orally so direct application of the hormone must be nasal or sublingual, markedly increases displays of social trust between test subjects. Over the past year, regulatory agencies in a number of counties have closed down efforts to market various products that directly deliver oxytocin on the grounds that it aids human sexual predators, sales agents, etc. Flax oil and Motherwort are under the radar likely because the effect is limited and because they are not direct deliveries of oxytocin, but natural stimulators of the release of oxytocin in the body. In that oxytocin markedly reduces social anxiety and social "wariness", Motherwort may act as a calmative in this particular domain. The biological effect of Motherwort is minor in comparison to the direct delivery of the pure hormone nasally, but if taken in larger doses may lead so some females or product consumers at risk of making poor social choices(or product choices based on trust of the sales person) based on a suppression of natural wariness because of the elevation of oxytocin. Please do not discontinue this product because I have found that it is particularly helpful in helping children with "attachment disorder" bond more quickly and with reduced trauma with new adoptive a foster parents. My supposition is that this product may also be useful in couple's therapy when, if taken before the session, may create a hormonal environment that aids cooperative interaction and healing It may also be a useful pre-sex supplement that might make sex between consenting adults more emotionally satisfying. After searching many sites, your store is one of the very few who sell concentrated Motherwort in tincture. There may be a way to gently warn women that should they consume substantial Motherwort, their functional social wariness and carefulness regarding themselves and the natural wariness that is possibly useful in protecting their children, may be compromised.
