A member of the coffee plant family, Rubiaceae, and in a large genus of over 1400 species, Psychotria viridis is a small, slow-growing shrub reaching 14 feet tall. This is one of the key ingredients in many magical brews, which are protected via religious freedom in the United States when used as a sacrament by the Santo Daime Church.

Unlike the American Indians, where the use of peyote is only approved if an individual can show that they are of American Indian descent, anyone who is a member of the Santo Daime Church in the United States has the right to use P. viridis in church sacraments.
