Verbascum thapsus (“Great Mullein”) grows natively in northern Africa, Asia, and Europe and as an introduced plant in Australia and the Americas. Dioscorides, the pioneering Greek physician, first recognized Mullein for the support of upper respiratory tract function nearly two centuries ago and the same use is recognized by herbalists today.* Mullein is also widely used in herbal formulas for its emollient (hydrating) and astringent properties.
