If anyone makes the above claim, know that it most-likely isn’t true. Tinctures are made with grain alcohol, and the plant essence is extracted from alcohol only, leaving behind many of the plant’s essence, partly because many plants, being water-based, extract partially into water as well. Elixirs are made with high quality wines…which balances the amount of plant essence extracted into water as well as alcohol, capturing a full spectrum of the plant, rather than a few isolated alkaloids or components.

Elixirs can be much more difficult to craft than crude alcohol tinctures becuase with a lower alcohol content, it takes much more care to exrtact all of the alkaloids from the plant you are trying to bottle. A common trick is to add grain alcohol to an elixir while it’s cooking, to pull more of the alkaloids out, and then burning off the grain alcohol, but this leaves an adulterated product that is inferior to a true elixir.

We slow-cook our tinctures for over a week, just as they were originally intended to be crafted, making for a thorough, full-spectrum elixir that is pure and potent.
