"Spirit of the Shuar" - by John Perkins
The Shuar of the Amazon rainforest have lived in harmony with their surroundings for countless ages. Perkins came into contact with them while on a Peace Corps stint in the 1960s, and has sought to spread their philosophy of simplicity and balance ever since. Spirit of the Shuar intertwines transcribed tape recordings of Shuar voices with Perkins's experiences. Unlike anthropological accounts, such as Philippe Descola's more eloquent but detached Spears of Twilight, Perkins's book is conversational and enthusiastic. He teaches us about a spirituality that arises from a deep connection with nature, one in which shamans use hallucinogens to go on spiritual journeys; the spirits of nature yield hidden knowledge about plants; and dreams can always be fulfilled.

"Timothy Leary: Outside Looking In" - by Robert Forte
A STAR-STUDDED HEARTFELT TRIBUTE!

His admirers have compared him to Socrates and Galileo Galilei; he was called “the most dangerous man alive,” by then-President Richard Nixon. He was, at various points a Harvard Professor, a respected psychologist, a renowned writer of fiction and non-fiction, an academic outcast, a “stand-up philosopher,” a convict, and a fugitive. He testified before the U.S. Senate, hosted some of the 20th century’s greatest artists, thinkers, writers and musicians at Millbrook Mansion, spent time with Eldridge Cleaver and the Black Panthers, escaped from Folsom prison, toured as a lecturer, made a film with his old nemesis G. Gordon Liddy, and, while incarcerated in Folsom, occupied a cell next to Charles Manson.

Dr. Timothy Leary was unquestionably one of the most consistently fascinating, thought-provoking, and controversial figures of the second half of the 20th century. By turns brilliant, naive, charismatic, and contradictory, Leary was a tireless advocate for psychedelic drugs and their roles in examining and expanding human consciousness. He pioneered the idea of “set and setting” determining the outcome of one’s drug experience, urged the 60s generation to “turn on, tune in, and drop out,” (a slogan he later lamented was woefully misinterpreted), and, perhaps most importantly, held a deep conviction that psychedelics ought not remain in the hands of the academic and scientific elite, but should be available for all to use as tools of self-improvement and discovery. This pivotal decision to democratize psychedelics, like much of the rest of Leary’s colorful life, resonated through myriad aspects of our culture, and continues to do so nearly 20 years after his death.

In 1999, five years after Leary died, Robert Forte, who has served on the board of directors of the Albert Hofmann Foundation and is the editor of Entheogens and the Future of Religion, brought together a veritable who’s who of psychedelic writers, musicians, artists, scientists and academics to look back on one of the largest lives lived in the last 100 years. Timothy Leary: Outside Looking In includes interviews (most conducted by Forte himself) and contributions from the likes of Terence McKenna, Hunter S. Thompson, Winona Ryder, William S. Burroughs, Aldous Huxley, Dr. Andrew Weil, Allen Ginsberg, and many more. Outside Looking In is a multifaceted, engrossing reflection on one of 20th century America’s most prominent, maligned, and misunderstood historical figures. It honors Leary, and yet never shies away from discussing the most difficult and troublesome aspects of his complex persona, or the ramifications of his turbulent, public life and work during the 60s and 70s. Both for those already knowledgeable of Leary, and those who simply appreciate a vivid, compelling portrait of an extraordinary man, his life, and times, Timothy Leary: Outside Looking In is sure to please. Highly recommended.

"Way of Passion" - by Andrew Harvey
This book became my "bible" for a while, and i never wanted to put it down. Andrew is extremely articulate and can plainly see into the innermost depths of Rumi's words, words that often talk about direct contact with the Divine, and revelation of the Divine through the surrender of ones false self. Rumi was a poet who started the Sufi movement, and even today Sufiism is gaining momentum as more and more explorers discover the sacred within oneself.

“Andean Awakening“ - by Jorge Luis Delgado
It is an extraordinary time to be alive, as a long-foretold alignment of the Earth with the axis of the Milky Way galaxy announces a new dawn. In Peru, descendants of the Inca call this time the Pachakuti, 'the return of the light' after 500 years of darkness. Peru is said to be the "morning of the new sun" - the portal through which rays of the new light will begin to awaken humanity to a new consciousness.

In this illustrated guidebook, Peru's premiere spiritual tour guide, Jorge Delgado, takes the reader on a trip of discovery through the most powerful and mystical places on earth - Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, Lake Titicaca and the magical Inca doorway of Aramu Muru.

Jorge Delgado was born in a small Andean village in Peru. In Andean Awakening Delgado opens the door to his mystical homeland as he describes his own journey of awakening and packs his personal narrative with fascinating details about Peru, its history, culture, mythos and magic. Delgado is our personal Quechua - a bridge person who helps others to cross from one state of conscious to another. Delgado bridges readers to the spiritual power of the Andes, of Peru and legend of the Inca - the return of the Children of the Sun.

About the Authors:

Jorge Luis Delgado, born in the highlands near Lake Titicaca, Peru, is of Aymara Incan heritage. His mother is from a family of herders and his father was a teacher. Growing up in a large family in Puno, Peru, Jorge Luis began carrying bags for people in Puno to earn extra money for the family. After he graduated with superior grades from high school, Jorge Luis continued in this tradition and chose to be a tour guide. Early in his career, he concentrated on being very scientific as he worked in the area of the Sacred Valley, including Machu Picchu, and the area surrounding Lake Titicaca. Today, Jorge Luis is known around the world as a knowledgeable guide of the Sacred Valley and the High Plateau of the Andes. His knowledge spans the culture, the traditions, and the spiritual heritage of his vibrant Inca world. Jorge Luis now has his own tour company, Kontiki Tours, and is currently building his third Taypikala Hotel. Most important, Jorge Luis is a "chacaruna," a bridge person, who assists people in connecting to their spiritual self within their own traditions. Jorge Luis lives in Puno with his wife and three children.

MaryAnn Male, PhD and her husband, Theron, first traveled to Peru with a small group in August, 2000 and met Jorge Luis, their guide. It was on their second trip to the Andes that MaryAnn and Theron asked Jorge Luis to share his wealth of knowledge with the world in a book that would present an authentic Inca voice about his beautiful heritage. They traveled with Jorge Luis, met many of his teachers, and began recording his thoughts and his celebration of life. Since 1985 MaryAnn Male has been a practicing licensed psychologist with a specialty in trauma response.

“The Power of the Poppy: Harnessing Nature’s Most Dangerous Plant Ally“ - by Kenaz Filan
Few plant allies have a history as long and well-documented as Papaver somniferum, the celebrated and infamous opium poppy. For thousands of years people around the world have been unable to resist the poppy’s siren song of intoxicating pleasure, pain relief, and visionary states--so much so that this potent plant has literally adapted itself to human civilization: in increasing its intoxicating properties, it came to rely solely on humankind for its propagation.

From 6,000-year-old poppy seeds found in archaeological digs in Europe to the black tar heroin factories of South America and the modern “War on Drugs,” Kenaz Filan explores the history of this enduring plant and its many derivatives--including opium, morphine, oxycodone, methadone, and fentanyl--as well as its symbiotic relationship with humans as medicine, food, intoxicant, and visionary tool. Profiling 11 famous users, including Thomas de Quincey, William S. Burroughs, Lou Reed, and DJ Screw, Filan examines how opium and other poppy derivatives inspired them as well as the high price it exacted for its inspiration. Covering techniques of cultivation, extraction, and safe consumption along with methods for overcoming addiction and staying “clean,” this book offers a sensible approach to the poppy that recognizes the plant not as a crop to be harvested or eradicated but as a living, sentient ally that can offer healing or harm and must be approached with respect and caution.

About the Author:

Kenaz Filan (née Houngan Coquille du Mer) was initiated in Société la Belle Venus in March 2003 after 10 years of solitary service to the lwa. He is the author of The Haitian Vodou Handbook, Vodou Love Magic, and Vodou Money Magic and the coauthor of Drawing Down the Spirits, among others. A frequent contributor to PanGaia, Planet Magazine, and Widdershins, Filan is the former managing editor of newWitch magazine and lives in Short Hills, New Jersey.

Praise for Power of the Poppy:

“The Power of the Poppy is truly a magnificent book. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of psychoactives, the drug war, or a personal relationship with powerful plant allies.”
(Stephen Harrod Buhner, author of The Secret Teachings of Plants)

“Kenaz Filan’s well-researched compilation of Poppy’s history, uses, constituents, derivatives, and personal accounts will more than inform you about this powerful plant--it will invite you to deeply consider the price one pays for such a potent ally.”
(Pam Montgomery, herbalist and author of Plant Spirit Healing)

“Like cannabis, the poppy is an ancient medicinal plant, both revered and maligned. Kenaz Filan performs a crucial service in educating us about its history, both agricultural and cultural, and examining its potential for healing and harm. Most importantly, the author offers hope and heart to those struggling with addiction.”
(Julie Holland, editor of Ecstasy: The Complete Guide and The Pot Book: A Complete Guide to Cannabis)

“The Power of the Poppy offers a frank and precise analysis of the mystical, chemical, and social aspects of a plant that has fascinated humans for millennia. Readers will gain the data they need to make informed decisions.”
(Elizabeth Barrette, author of Composing Magic)

“An eminently readable book, this examination of the poppy's contribution to humankind, for both good and ill, belongs on every shelf. Written in a beguiling, conversational tone that kept this reader reading late into the night. . . An open-eyed, unbiased and realistic examination of the history of the poppy and its products, this book will appear to a broad range of readers. They will not be disappointed.”
(Marlene Y. Satter, ForeWord Magazine, March 2011)

“The Power of the Poppy elucidates the many ways the histories of man and poppy are intertwined and it’s full of interesting tidbits along the way. . . If you have an interest in opium and its role in human affairs, The Power of the Poppy will be both entertaining and enlightening.”
(StoptheDrugWar.org, May 2011)

“The Power of the Poppy is truly a magnificent book. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of psychoactives, the drug war, or a personal relationship with powerful plant allies.”

“Visionary Plant Consciousness - The Shamanic Teachings of the Plant World“ - edited by J.P. Harpignies
Visionary plants have long served indigenous peoples and their shamans as enhancers of perception, thinking, and healing. These plants can also be important guides to the reality of the natural world and how we can live harmoniously in it.

In Visionary Plant Consciousness, editor J. P. Harpignies has gathered presentations from the Bioneers annual conference of environmental and social visionaries that explore how plant consciousness affects the human condition. Twenty-three leading ethnobotanists, anthropologists, medical researchers, and cultural and religious figures such as Terence McKenna, Andrew Weil, Wade Davis, Michael Pollan, Alex Grey, Jeremy Narby, Katsi Cook, John Mohawk, and Kat Harrison, among others, present their understandings of the nature of psychoactive plants and their significant connection to humans. What they reveal is that these plants may help us access the profound intelligence in nature--the “mind of nature”--that we must learn to understand in order to survive our ecologically destructive way of life.

About the Editor:

J. P. Harpignies is associate producer of the national Bioneers conference (www.bioneers.org) and coproducer and founder of the Eco-Metropolis conference (www.ecometropolis.org) in New York City. He is the author of Political Ecosystems and Double Helix Hubris and the associate editor of Ecological Medicine and Nature’s Operating Instructions.

Praise for Visionary Plant Consciousness:

“Humans have long considered psychoactive plants as teachers. This book seeks to inform Westerners about these powerful plants and about the shamans who knew how to use them. Their words are clear and simple, and often based on personal experience. The result is an accessible book PACKED with knowledge.” —Jeremy Narby, author of The Cosmic Serpent
