There are many varieties available. Our calamus is always American Calamus (Americanus), which grows only in the northern United States. Acorus calamus var. Americanus contains plenty of Alpha-asarone, but it lacks significant amounts of Beta-asarone, which is suspected of being carcinogenic.*
