Damiana (Turnera diffusa)

Damiana is obtained from the shrub Turnera diffusa, which is native to the U.S. Southwest and northern Mexico.  It has been clinically-proven to have a direct stimulating effect on the sexual organs, and ancedotal evidence shows that it can be made even more powerful when combined in equal parts with Saw Palmetto berries.

Some users of the combination tea  (Damiana and Saw Palmetto) report that, taken an hour or so before sexual activity, it helps produce a more satisfactory experience. The best results seem to be obtained when Damiana is taken in moderation over a period of time, as is the case with many natural herbal supplements and remedies. If you make the above blend into a tea, and drink it consistently for 1-2 weeks, and then supplement with a tea drink 30 minutes to 1 hour before sexual activity, it seems to have to most potent and noticeable effect.

A favorite DAMIANA RECIPE we found on the internet is a delightfully strong tasting cordial:

To craft it, simply soak 1oz of Damiana Flowers & Tops, 2 tablespoons of Saw Palmetto berries, 2 tablespoons of Angelica root and a l/2 tablespoon of vanilla pods in 750 ml. of Vodka. Shake the mixture every day for a week.  After a week of this, strain the mixture through a muslin bag or coffee filter, saving the liquid.

Simultaneously, soak 1oz of Damiana Flowers & Tops, 2 tablespoons of Saw Palmetto berries, 2 tablespoons of Angelica root and a l/2 tablespoon of vanilla pods in 750 ml. of Distilled Water. Shake the mixture every day for a week.  After a week of this, strain the mixture through a muslin bag or coffee filter, saving the liquid.

From the water extraction, heat it up but do not boil it.  Once it reaches a nice hot (but not boiling!) temperature, dissolve one cup of honey into the hot liquid. After the honey has dissolved, remove from the heat, allow to cool somewhat and then add it to the first (Vodka) mixture.

Now comes the difficult part:  Allow this mixture to "age" for 1 month!

After that, take 1oz of liqueur each day for a week, and see what happens.  Herbs usually work in a gentle fashion so don't expect instantaneous results. Indeed, because of their different metabolism, some people may not experience any effects whatever, while others may find the results too potent. Use these herbs in a respectful manner and use them in moderation, over-indulgence or extended use may have harmful side-effects.

Botanical Notes

Damiana is a small green shrub found throughout Mexico and Central America. Since ancient times, the indigenous peoples of this region have used the bittersweet leaves of Damiana as an aphrodisiac and for the smooth sedative effects.  Damiana is Mexico's herbal version of Viagra and not only consumed by men. Damiana has been used for centuries by Mexican women. They found that a cup of Damiana tea taken one or two hours before intercourse helped to immerse them in their passion.

Damiana is classified as a nervine tonic and contains seta-bitoserol which has a direct stimulating effect on sexual organs.  Damiana is used by people in Oaxaca, Mexico for strengthening the nervous and hormonal systems. Some claim that drunk as a tea it has a relaxing effect not-unlike low doses of a well-known, but illegal herb. Only the tops and leaves are harvested while the plant is in flower to assure a high alkaloid content.

Other Recorded Uses

Damiana has stimulating properties and has been used for nervousness, weakness and exhaustion. Damiana has been recommended for increasing sperm count in the male, and to strengthen the egg in the female. It helps to balance the hormones in women. In Mexico, it is used for female disorders. It is especially beneficial for an exhausted state of the body and of the vital powers of the system. It is useful in increasing sexual prowess in persons who suffer from sexual weakness. It has been used as a mild tonic laxative for children. Damiana has been said to be one of the most popular and safest of all plants claimed to restore the natural sexual capacities and functions.

This is great for mixing with other smoking herbs. The aromatic smell and taste help it with the more bitter smokes such as Lions Ear, which is one of my favorites while relaxing with your favorite tea of the same mix.

Wonderful smell, fresh and finely ground consistency ready to use. Can’t wait to try the recipe posted in the article. Wonder how it will compare to the commercially made liquor? This is a fine herb and is a great bargain too.

i have different "ratings" for this depending on its use.... 1 star for its smokeable psychoactivity; 5 stars for its price; 5 stars for its smoothness; 5 stars for burning extremely slow; 5 stars for a perfect consistency similar to basil/oregano or a tea packet mix. in short, its smoke isn't noticably psychoactive (for me), but it burns very slow, and unfiltered cigarettes aren't harsh at all. on a side note, however, i've had several independent sources tell me it smelled like weed (without my asking!), so you might want to smoke it in a "friendly" environment, be down-wind, and/or be ready to do some explaining. this truly is the biggest bummer for me because i want a tobacco alternative that i can still use in public settings without drawing attention to myself. other than that, it's perfect for satisfying those "mental urges" to just casually smoke something when my friends are smoking tobacco, and, again, unfiltered cigarettes burn amazingly smooth!
