La Hoja (pronounced "La Oha") is Old Traditional Yerba Mate from Argentina. Yerba Mate (pronounced "yerba mahtay") is a medicinal and cultural drink introduced to the world by the Guarani Indians of South America, Mate contains ingredients that not only helps keep its drinkers healthy and energetic, but has been shown to be a GREAT WEIGHT LOSS AID as well. Out of about 12 brands we personally sampled, this was unanimously the Staff Favorite in relation to Yerba Mates from Argentina. This is truly some "meaty" yerba mate, and has a bold, but very smooth flavor.

Great Maté. A MONSTER bag. Delivered in an open zip lock with a rip in the bag, but ... it's a HUGE bag. Can't fit in a regular zip lock! Alright, Maté: Don't steep it too long, or it's nasty bitter. If you do on accident, just add more milk. Maté is a great coffee alternative. Not for flavor, but the stimulant effect does *not* give you that anxious caffeine feeling; it's also a decent appetite suppressant. Drink it during work - you'll find you work right through any snack cravings. One downside that isn't mentioned often, is that Yerba Maté has a sort of temporary dulling to the coloring of your teeth. Traditional use of the Bombilla seems to avoid this by the metal straw depositing the fluid over your tongue, instead of sipping it through/near your teeth like regular tea/coffee. Just a heads up.

I had used Yerba Mate perhaps 20 years ago, after reading an article on it in Muscle and Fitness. I found it in a health food store. It was pricey, and I don't know how genuine it was. This product was very satisfying. The price is very fair, and the product seems to be the real deal. In fact, I had way underestimated how strong it was going to be. I usually drink two double espressos in the morning. I would say the effect of YM is similar (one rounded tablespoon, infused for a good long time) in terms of the stimulant effect, but it lasts longer and doesn't create any nervousness.

I just bought my second kilo of La Hoja...drinking mate has replaced 90% of my caffeine intake (i.e. coffee). AWESOME with stevia and milk, all the benefits without the tweakiness !
