Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a hardy perennial flowering plant, with heads of sweetly scented pink or white flowers. Valerian has a long history of use in herbal medicine as a sedative, and it is an effective aid when restless from any spiritual experience. Current use of valerian is a natural remedy for insomnia. Valerian root contains many constituents, including essential oils that appear to contribute to the herb's sedating qualities, and contemporary clinical studies have demonstrated that Valerian significantly improves sleep quality without morning grogginess.
In ordinary doses, it is quieting and soothing in its nature upon the brain and nervous system, but large doses, too often repeated, have a tendency to produce pain in the head, mental excitement, visual illusions, giddiness, restlessness, agitation, and even spasmodic movements.
