Rivea corymbosa Seeds - Ololiuqui

These rare seeds are related to Morning Glories, and come from Oaxaca, Mexico where they are cherished for both their history and the shamanic use. Reportedly, the priests and shamans held these plants sacred as a way to communicate with the spirit world. Now, though, this beautiful plant is a great addition to any garden, and the beautiful white flowers are a constant reminder of the historical significance of these gorgeous plants.

This prized plant provides only 1-2 seeds per flower, unlike Morning Glories that drop thousands of seeds per plant! But it's easy to grow, it's a fast-growing viney plant, and loves water and sunlight. It will quickly fill a windowsill or an entire garden if you let it.   Also, since these grow so abundantly and quickly, what we have done at the shop is cultivate the plants that generate 2 seeds per pod instead of 1, and then we start over with new plants germinated from the 2 seed pods.  Not only is there a much larger quantity of Rivea seeds per harvest, as a much larger percentage of the seed pods have 2 seeds instead of 1, we hope to generate pods that have 3 seeds or maybe even 4.  Time will tell and we will keep you posted.

Actually, many believe that the sacred Aztec plant that is perhaps the best kept secret from the outside world today, could actually be Rivea corymbosa seeds.  Ololiuhqui is reportedly held sacred among the local Indians in Sierra Madre, Oaxaca Mexico, and it has been reported that the local Mazatecas still cultivate the Rivea corymbosa plant as well.

Rivea corybosa grows easily and abundantly in the mountains of southern Mexico. Today in almost all the villages of Oaxaca you can find the Rivea corybosa plant and the seeds still serving the natives.  The plant itself is a climber, like Ipomoea violacea (Morning Glory) and has also been called "snake-plant" or "coaxihuitl" in the Nahuatl language. Seeds of the Rivea corybosa plant are very closely related to Morning Glories, it is a very rare but easily grown plant. It flowers abundantly, producing beautiful clusters of white tubular flowers. Ololiuhqui is the Nahuatl name for the seeds of the Rivea corybosa plant and means 'round thing', the seeds are small, oval and brown.

To maximize germination rates, these rare Rivea Corymbosa (Ololiuqui) seeds are untreated; they're never sprayed with poisons or harsh chemicals of any kind.

I've grown many morningglories and woodrose, but this was my first experience with Rivea. I purchased a pack of 50, but there were at least twice that many. No complaint there. These little buggers are hard. Perhaps soaking in water for a few hours first would help to soften the seed case, thus aiding germination. Counting out 50 was pleasant, but I found that woodrose produced a much more vibrant bloom. However, these are still a great product.

I wish I had known about these a long time ago. HBWR seeds can be so unreliable and can vary so much in quality, but these Rivea seeds have produced amazing and colorful flowers every time I've purchased them.
