The lotus is a species of Asian water lily known for its delicate, beautiful aquatic flowers. It can flourish in many different environments, from ponds to marshes and calm rivers. It also possesses tough seed pods: blue lotus seeds can germinate 200 years after shedding, although most seeds, however, will fail to germinate several years after being shed.

Native to southern Asia, the sacred blus lotus, Nelumbo nucifera, was introduced into Egypt about 2,500 years ago. However, it is no longer found in the Nile region. Blue lotus flowers are considered a sacred Buddhist symbol across India, Tibet, and China. The lotus’ cup-shaped flowers were frequently represented in ancient Egyptian art and architecture.
